North Carolina company invests $12m in sweet potato facility

Ham Produce Co. of Snow Hill will invest $12 million in a sweet potato dehydration facility in Farmville, creating 57 jobs that will earn average salaries of $38,123 plus benefits.

Natural Blend Vegetable Dehydrations LLC in Farmville will begin production on Sept. 30, the second sweet potato facility to come online in the region in the past 12 months.

"Since we bought the Farmville facility in 2009, it has been our goal to bring jobs back to Farmville," says Stacy Ham, vice president of Ham Produce.

North Carolina is the nation’s sweet potato leader, and farmers who grow the crop often also grow tobacco, due to the sweet potatoes value as a sustainable rotation crop. According to North Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, 300 North Carolina farmers produced nearly a billion pounds of sweet potatoes during the past decade.
