Wawa trumps 7-Eleven as favourite convenience store, poll says

There are by far more 7-Eleven stores than Wawa's, but consumers nationwide prefer the latter by nearly a two-to-one margin.

That's according to a survey of more than 5,000 consumers conducted by Market Force, a customer intelligence solutions company.

Market Force asked respondents to rate their satisfaction with their most recent convenience store experience and their likelihood to refer that store brand to others.

The survey found that Wawa came in a close second to QuickTrip, 79 percent to 74 percent. QuickTrip is a Tulsa-based store with most of its locations in the Midwest and South.

7-Eleven finished last in the survey, at 40 percent. Sheetz, a popular convenience store in Pennsylvania, came in third overall with 66 percent satisfaction from customers.

Wawa earned high marks for friendly service (62 percent), fast service (64 percent), clean interior and exterior (60 percent) and also the condition of its restrooms (56 percent). 7-11 finished below 50 percent in each of these categories.

When it comes to food, Wawa was noted for its food selection (49 percent), food quality (42 percent), coffee (54 percent) and its beverage station (46 percent). Again, 7-Eleven didn't earn high marks for these amenities.

"We’re seeing a phenomenon where convenience store brands are expanding their fresh food options as a way to lure new visitors through the door and cultivate loyalty," said Cheryl Flink, chief strategy officer for Market Force. "From offering salads and smoothies to take-home pizza and lasagna, regional convenience store chains are making food a priority. It’s a logical path to expansion because it draws market share from both quick-service restaurants and grocers offering both gas and on-the-go food options."
