Lidl unveils plan for £10m Nairn store
The German company wants to locate the store next to Sainsbury’s at Balmakeith and says it will be of a design not seen before in Scotland.
"We know that there are many shoppers locally making the journey to our Inverness and Forres stores and feel the Lidl brand would provide customer choice for Nairn," said Gary Sleator of Lidl UK.
Developer Ziran Land, which has yet to submit a planning application, described the project as "a major vote of confidence in the Nairn economy."
However, Rosemary Young, chairman of Nairn West Community Council, is concerned about the effect on the town centre of another out-of-town supermarket.
"It could be devastating for the High Street," she warned, while acknowledging some people might welcome the increased choice and jobs Lidl would provide.
A public exhibition of Lidl’s plans will be staged at Nairn Community and Arts Centre on Friday 26th September between 11am and 7pm.
