Cornish Asda to change sign after green logo is deemed ‘too garish’ by locals

Asda has been forced to change the sign of one of its Cornwall branches after residents complained it was ‘too garish’.

Locals in the coastal town of Hayle reacted with anger when the supermarket submitted plans for the branch – part of a £30million revamp of the area – which included its trademark bright green signs.

Residents expected a fight, but to their surprise the US-owned grocer immediately backed down, promising to swap out the logos for stainless steel ones and in doing so make it the only branch in the country not sporting the iconic green insignia.

‘We stuck to what we wanted, which brought everyone to the negotiating table,’ said Graham Coad, the mayor of Hayle, which is also a World Heritage site.

‘Asda were very considerate.’

And in another gesture of goodwill by the supermarket chain, Asda has promised to put up signs in Cornish as well as English to mark the new status of the county’s inhabitants as a national minority group.
