Coborn named N.D. grocer of the year

The North Dakota Grocer's Association has honoured Coborn's Inc. President and CEO Chris Coborn as its Grocer of the Year. He was nominated by SuperValu, and the recipient is chosen based on the nominees' store operations, contributions to the grocery industry, individual standards, association service, leadership, activities and community service.

Tom Orwoll, area sales director for SuperValu's Northern Region, which includes the Minneapolis, Bismarck and Fargo areas, wrote the letter nominating Coborn. In it, he highlighted Coborn's growth in the North Dakota market, beginning in 2012 with several stores in the western part of the state. Orwoll pointed out Coborn's continued growth with new stores in Jamestown, Watford City and Minot.

The letter also pointed out Coborn has served on boards for the National Grocers Association, Minnesota Grocers Association, Food Marketing Institute and Topco. And Coborn's donated 1.4 million meals in 2013 through a partnership with Second Harvest Heartland. It also has partnered with the Salvation Army throughout North Dakota and the Great Plains Food Bank.

Previously, Coborn was recognized in 2011 as the Independent Retailer of the Year by Grocery Headquarters. In 2010, Coborn's was named Family Business of the Year for Community Service and Philanthropy according to Minnesota Business magazine.
