US (CA): Survey says Temecula residents want a Whole Foods

In a recent survey of Temecula residents conducted by Encinitas-based True North Research, about 40 percent said they would be “very interested” in a Whole Foods, a sometimes pricey supermarket chain that carries a lot of organic and “natural” items. Another 19 percent said they would be “somewhat interested.”

The question was asked after 9 percent of survey respondents, a demographically diverse sample of 400 people, listed “Whole Foods” when asked which one or two stores they would like to be located here.

If Whole Foods decides to build in Temecula, it would join a fairly crowded roster of markets that includes discount stores, major chains such as Vons and Albertsons and local favourites like Barons and Sprouts.

The closest Whole Foods right now, as the crow flies, is Laguna Niguel. There also is one in Encinitas. On Sept. 24, the chain is scheduled to open a store in Palm Desert, which will be the first Whole Foods in Riverside County.

A spokeswoman for Whole Foods, Shari Gold, said there are no plans to open a store in Temecula in 2015 but the company was flattered by the results of the survey.

“It’s always great to hear about supportive communities!” she enthused in an email.

The publicly traded company typically provides details about future openings via its earnings releases and notifications on its website, Gold noted. She encouraged Whole Foods fans to keep checking those resources for the tea leaves, presumably free trade and organic, that may herald the chain’s arrival here.
