New member: Dutch retailer Jumbo Supermarkets builds on GLOBALG.A.P.
"Jumbo is the second largest retailer in the Netherlands and has a tradition with sustainability," said Anne-Corine Vlaardingerbroek, Project Manager Sustainability, Jumbo Supermarkets. "We have been involved with GLOBALG.A.P. via the Dutch Retail Association since the beginning and require GLOBALG.A.P. for many of our products. As we strengthen our position, we would like to work more directly with GLOBALG.A.P. to help shape the future of safe and sustainable agriculture!"
GLOBALG.A.P. CEO Kristian Moeller welcomes the active involvement of Jumbo. “We at GLOBALG.A.P. expect significant progress particularly in our livestock related activities, both in The Netherlands and worldwide, as Anne-Corine Vlaardingerbroek continues to serve on our Technical Committee Livestock where she has already made substantial contributions," he said.
Jumbo Supermarkets is part of the privately owned Van Eerd Group, which was originally a grocery wholesale company, established in 1921. In 1983, Van Eerd started the "Jumbo Supermarkten" supermarket chain. Within a short time dozens of Jumbos were established in the provinces of North Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg. The family-owned company, based in Veghel, underwent a major expansion following the acquisition of Super de Boer supermarkets in 2009 and C1000 supermarkets in 2012.
Today the company employs approx. 27,000 staff at its stores, and approx. 3,000 at its headquarters and various distribution centres. Its 400 stores serve a total of three million customers weekly.
Jumbo was awarded the ‘best retail chain’ title in 2010 (Stichting Retail Jaarprijs), in the supermarkets category. In the same category it won the ‘Customer Centric DNA Awards 2011’, which is awarded to the best customer- oriented company in the Netherlands. Recently Jumbo was the sector winner in the Dutch Customer Performance Index (DCPI).
