Poland: Promotion of apple juice consumption to tackle oversupply issues

The Polish Association of National Juice Producers has launched a campaign for the promotion of juices, nectars and drinks made from Polish apples. In Poland, up to 260,000 tonnes of Polish apples are used in the production of juices and nectars (140,000 tonnes) and beverages (120,000 tonnes). The average Pole drinks approximately 3 litres of apple juice and nectars per year. Apple juice is also the second most popular, behind orange juice (according to Nielsen June 2014).

According to representatives of the Association, increased consumption of apple juice is also a good way to tackle the oversupply of apples in Poland caused by the Russian ban on imports, as only by doubling the intake of apple juices and nectars an additional 140,000 tonnes of apples would be needed.

The juice market in Poland has been declining for several years. The average Pole drinks approximately 11.7 litres of juice per year per person (0.9 litres per month), which give an average of approx. 32 ml of juice per day, which is significantly less than recommended by nutritional experts. In the European Union, the average juice consumption stands at approximately 13.4 litres per year per person.
