Supermarket Rimi, Estonia: fruit and vegetable prices drop

Fruit and vegetable prices have recently changed in favour of consumers, which could be caused by sanctions imposed by Russia. According to the representative of retailers chain Rimi - Alice Erbach, the prices started to drop in spring, in May and June fruit and vegetables cost almost 10 % less than last year. In July, prices fell even lower.

It is emphasized that in general the price decline depends on the yield. If the yield is good, the product is cheaper; however, it is quite likely to be induced by the Russian embargo as well. When there is excess supply, the prices fall. However, it has not yet had any significant impact on the cost of fruit and vegetables, - explained Erbach.

Different European countries supplied some products into Rimi retailers at low prices, e.g. tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers were much cheaper than last year.

The Head of Selver - Kristi Lomp, informed that due to high season for harvesting fruit and vegetables in Europe, the purchase prices have dropped, but the volume of sales has significantly increased compared to last year.
