Romania: 178,350 Lei in penalties to fruit and vegetable traders

Inspectors of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) have imposed fines totalling 178,350 lei between 20 July and 10 August 2014 on fruit and vegetable traders from across the Romanian capital and the cities of Iasi, Brasov, Cluj, Timisoara and Targoviste.

In the controls, more than 500 companies and individuals were inspected, and 215 sanctions were applied totalling 178,350 lei. Additionally, 14,623 kilograms of vegetables and fruits were seized. Controls aimed mainly at the origin of the goods sold, the legality of the purchase transactions and/or import and sales operations or the compliance with marketing and quality standards.

For greater efficiency, the controls were carried out in mixed teams, consisting of inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fraud police officers or county police and inspectors from the Directorates of Veterinary and Food Safety.
