Czech Republic: Billa opens new logistics centre in Modletice

The Czech supermarket chain Billa has opened a new logistics centre in Modletice, near Prague. It has a warehouse area of 15,500 square metres and will be used for foods that need controlled low temperature storage.

The new centre will supply all 207 Billa stores with meat, sausages, dairy products, fruits, vegetables and delicacies. The total investment amounts to a little over 499 million crowns (around 18 million Euro) and it will create 160 new jobs.

In a year, Billa expects to handle around 30 million boxes of goods, including 20 million boxes of fruit and vegetables, which will be shipped within one and a half days from arrival. The new warehouse holds over 2,500 different articles from more than 200 suppliers, mainly Czech.

"Now we have 90% of all our goods in one place and we can quickly and flexibly respond to orders from stores to meet the needs of our customers. From the new centre, fresh products will be delivered to our supermarkets five times a week, and in the case of fruits and vegetables this could be even six times a week," said Jaroslaw Szczypka, CEO of Billa in the Czech Republic.
