Canada: Slow start to sweet corn harvest
The early crops are not very big, not very sweet and not very colourful due to the wet and cool weather we saw during the spring.
Producers say ripening needs a combination of water and heat - and while this week's rain is taking care of the water needs of the crop, they're hoping for a hot spell to follow to sweeten things up.
The farmers are also worried about Ontario producers undercutting the market by selling bulk bags of five dozen ears for $15.
One Quebec farmer told the Journal de Montreal that prices for locally-grown corn are expected to stay around $5 per dozen.
