Italy: Indian fig campaign is starting

"We are ready to start the Indian fig campaign, although we are a few weeks late as ripening was slower due to the low temperatures. The campaign is looking good and grades are uniform. We are expecting a 20% increase in production for both the Agostana and Bastardone varieties," explains Paolo D'Angelo from D'Angelo Paolo

"We have always focused on the foreign markets - Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Netherlands, as there are many Moroccan and Tunisian communities who really appreciate the fruit. In 2013 we have also started working with colder countries like Sweden and Denmark."

Summer fruit is not doing extremely well this season because of weather, price and consumption problems. Indian figs are also at risk: "first of all, Ramadan started early this year and our fruit will only be available for one week and, secondly, consumption is just as low as that of other fruit."

"We are working on biomass projects for both waste and thinning material. In addition, we would like to produce organic Indian fig honey and fruit juice."

The company holds the GlobalGAP certification.
