Lebanon: Ramadan drives fruit and vegetable prices up

For the fourth consecutive week, prices in Lebanon have continued to increase since the start of the holy month of Ramadan, especially for vegetables and fruits, making ​​their purchase more difficult.
 
In the markets of the city of Beirut and its suburbs, a high increase has been registered in the price of fruits, especially seasonal fruits, needed by Lebanese citizens to compensate for the lack of vitamins in the body due to fasting. Prices have actually increased by nearly 100 % compared to last year.

Peaches reached 8,500 Lebanese pounds per kilo, when last year they were sold for 4,500 pounds. Last season, the price of a kilo of cherries stood at 5,000 pounds and this year it has reached 10,000 pounds. A kilo of grapes was sold for 6,000 pounds last year and this season it has reached 8,500 pounds. Meanwhile, peaches have increased from 4,500 to 6,500 pounds per kilo.

As for vegetables, the price of a kilo of tomatoes increased to 2,500 pounds per kilo, green peppers have reached approximately 2,500 pounds per kilo, aubergines stand at 3,000 pounds per kilo, peas have reached 5,000 pounds per kilo and beans stand at around 5,000, and sometimes up to 8,000 pounds per kilo.
