Walmart plans to open supermarket in Citrus Heights

Walmart, continuing to expand its presence in the Sacramento area grocery industry, said Tuesday it will open a supermarket in Citrus Heights early next year.

The big retailer said it will open a 39,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market at 6197 Sunrise Boulevard.

Walmart said it expects to hire 95 workers to staff the store.

It's the latest example of Walmart's push into greater Sacramento. Between its Supercenters and its smaller Neighbhorhood Markets, the nonunion, low-cost retailer has established a major presence in the region's grocery industry in recent years.

Walmart has disrupted the established order in the grocery industry, grabbing significant market share from unionised chains such as Raley's, Safeway Inc. and Save Mart.
