US: Market Basket fires CEO, two other top managers

Arthur T. Demoulas, the CEO of Demoulas Supermarkets Inc., was apparently fired by the company's board of directors, numerous named and unnamed sources said.

Cheri Nolan, general manager at the Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover, said she heard just past 2 p.m. Monday firings had taken place. She confirmed Arthur T. Demoulas had been let go along with Bill Marsden, Market Basket operations director, and Joseph Rockwell, vice president of grocery sales and merchandising.

"We're all very heartbroken here," Nolan said.

Nolan said she had just been contacted by a store manager who informed the group at the country club.

"I don't know what happened," she told The Sun of Lowell. "We don't know. We're waiting for (a follow-up) call."

Last week, dozens of people turned out at the country club, which is owned by Demoulas, to support Nolan whose job was apparently threatened by two representatives from Sterling Golf Management, a company hired by the chain to oversee the club.

The "Save Market Basket" Facebook page posted Monday afternoon that Demoulas, Marsden and Rockwell were fired.

"I hope Arthur T. does start his own line of stores and moves every employee with him to those stores!!!" wrote Laura Fitzgerald.

Market Basket operates more then 70 stores, including two in Fitchburg and one in Leominster.
