Honduras: Nine banana plantations on strike

At least 2,000 labourers of nine banana plantations have been striking since last Monday.

According to members of the Union of Labourers of the Tela Railroad Company (SITRATERCO), the goal of these strike actions is to demand the reinstatement of an employee who was suspended for eight days without pay.

The labourers argue that the measure violates a provision of the union's collective agreement.

The plantations paralysed are Cobb in El Progreso, Omonita, Corozal, Mopala, Ceibita, Santa Rosa, Indiana, Limones and Laurel.

Joselino Cruz, recording secretary of Villa Cobb's union, said they decided to start striking due to the violation of various provisions of the collective agreement.

He stated that all plantations have agreed to strike indefinitely until the employee is reinstated with a clean record.
