Germany: asparagus season reaches peak

The Germans are world champions in the area of asparagus consumption. In the past year they ate 1.1 kg of asparagus per person on average - more than in any other country. At the moment the supply here is especially big and the people can eat as much as they want of the tasty vegetables. The season of the royal vegetable started especially early this year in Germany. The reason for this was the mild weather. The largest asparagus cultivation areas in Germany are in Lower Saxony (4,303 hectares), Nordrhein-Westfalen (3,242 hectares) and Brandenburg (2,862 hectares). Asparagus is grown on around 20,000 hectares in Germany, making the asparagus the main vegetable of the country.
