Low production

Mexico: Avocado prices increased 100%

Once again, the price of avocados skyrocketed due to a decline in production and an increase in exports, among other factors.

The price of the fruit began to rise in March 2014 and, up to now, it has increased by up to 100%, from 18 to 36 pesos per kilo at the wholesale food market in Guadalajara.

The vice president of the State Councils of the National Agricultural Council, Mauro Jiménez Iniguez, said that retail prices for the kilo of fruit in the central market and in supermarkets was between 45 and 50 pesos, but, he stated, it was a temporary rise.

"This year's harvest was lower than the last one and, of course, there is a smaller supply of the product and prices rose," he said.

In turn, Ignacio Gonzalez, President of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Avocado in Jalisco, said the production in the United States had dropped by 50% this year, so it is demanding more Mexican product.

According to producers, the rise in prices is normal during the months of low production, so, according to their forecasts, prices would start dropping in June.

Jimenez Iniguez denied that the security problems in Michoacán, the leading producer, would continue to be a factor that affected the price.

"There is a risk in Michoacán, but is no longer a factor that affects the cost," he said.
