Carrefour group remains market leader thanks to smaller supermarkets

According to Kantar Worlpanel, the Carrefour group remains market leader with 20.5% of market share in March.

''The Carrefour Market banner allows the Carrefour group to stabilise it's market share at 20.5%'', which leads one to believe that Carrefour's hypermarkets are decreasing (Market gained 0.2 points in March at 7.8%). Convenience stores also announced a 6% rise, +0.3 points, and City, Contact etc should follow suit, so the hypermarkets must be dropping.

However with an overall 20.5% market share the Carrefour group remains a stable leader. Their main competitor, Leclerc, is also ''positively'' stable thanks to a ''higher number of clients and a growing purchasing frequency''.

Intermarché, Système U and Delhaize are also stable. Casino benefits from Franprix's (1.8% market share) and Géant's (2.5%) growth which shows that the price decreases over the last few months were successful.

Lidl is the only discount store to not experience a decrease, +0.2 points at 4.8%, but is it really 'discount' when they are advertising on television and renewing their business model?
