Spain: 2014 starts with increase in port traffic

2014 has started with an increase in Spain's domestic port traffic. The 37,796,189 tonnes of goods handled at the country's 46 ports of general interest in January 2014 represented the third best figure on record for the Spanish port system, behind the ones registered in 2008 (40.5 million) and 2012 (37.9).

This increase is mainly the result of the higher volumes of liquid and solid bulk cargo (8% and 18% respectively), and general goods have only experienced a moderate drop, falling by 114,000 tonnes (0.7%).

Goods in transit, largely responsible for the drop in 2013's total traffic, have gained ground, growing by 0.3% and surpassing 8.8 million tonnes.

Likewise, container traffic, which closed the year with drops (-1.3%), has grown by 0.4%, surpassing the million TEU containers; nevertheless, the traffic of goods in containers in transit continues to drop (-5.27%), particularly in ports like Barcelona (-38.6%), Valencia (-21.8%) and Las Palmas (-19.6%).

Meanwhile, ro/ro traffic (roll-on/roll-off), continues to grow, which is good news for motorways of the sea and short sea shipping and emphasizes the competitiveness and complementarity of maritime-land transport, according to the Ministry of Public Works.

While 2013 finished with a total 3.87% increase and 44 million tonnes, the new year has kicked off with a 7% growth and 3.5 million tonnes.
