France: Supermarkets are cheaper in west
Leclerc emerged as the cheapest supermarket in the study, while Monoprix was the most expensive.
Leclerc customers in Lanester, Morbihan, for example, forked out €273 for a basket of 78 basic products, while Monoprix shoppers in Sceaux, Hauts de Seine, paid €394 for the same goods - a difference of 44%.
The lowest-cost shopping was found in the west, while Ile-de-France, Corsica, and the Alpes-Maritimes were the most expensive.
The survey for UFC-Que Choisir, compared more than 3,000 stores, and found average prices per supermarket ranged from €295 to €362.
The average rankings were: Leclerc €295, Géant-Casino €300, Hyper U €307 Intermarket Hyper and Carrefour, €311, Auchan and Simply Market €330, U Express €334, and Monoprix €362
