Coop and Migros Switzerland: different prices per region
A difference of almost 20 percent.
All over Switzerland regional products are being offered, mostly only in the production region. According to Migros spokesman Andreas Reinhart the branches involved trade with different cooperations: Wettingen is part of Migros Aare and Wiedikon belongs to Migros Zurich. These cooperations can decide for themselves at what price to sell a product. "Sheep's cheese in the Mittelland is a lot more popular than in Zürich. The demand here is a lot greater and as a result can be offered cheaper" Reinhart explains. In the region Zürich higher rent and salary costs can be added as well.
Also at Coop there are regional price differences. According to Coop spokesman Ramon Gander this is the result of the fact that not all Coop branches order their products from the same supplier. For instance mandarins in West Switzerland are a little cheaper than in the rest of Switzerland. This is because these mandarins are ordered form Corsica instead of from Spain" Gander says. Also the region Zürich has been hit by such price differences more than the rest of Switzerland. That is the result of the purchasing power being the largest here.
