Auchan Group finalises purchase of Real hypermarkets in Eastern Europe

On the 30th November 2012 the Auchan Group signed an agreement with German retailer Metro Group to buy Real's activity in Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. 95 hypermarkets and 13 shopping centres in Poland, Romania, Ukraine and Russia.

This external growth plan was finalised on the 6th February 2014. With its 57 extra Polish hypermarkets, Auchan now has 85 hypermarkets in the country (the 86th is expected to open in March 2014 in Lublin) and employs 22,000 people having taken on the 11,000 employees from ex-Real.

In 2013 the Auchan Group had already started to integrate 2 hypermarkets in Ukraine (in March), 16 hypermarkets in Russia (April) and 20 hypermarkets in Romania (September). Thanks to professional competence the group changeover is already completed in Russia and Ukraine, and will be completed in Romania in April. In these 3 countries, by mid 2013, over 9,000 new employees had joined the company.

Auchan is progressively introducing it's commercial strategy in the ex-Real shops, notably its new price policy. Auchan's business plan meets the consumer needs of the country and maintains an objective to improve purchasing power and quality of life for as many clients as possible.

The Auchan Group controls 834 hypermarkets, of which 267 are in Western Europe, 224 in Central and Eastern Europe and 343 in Asia, as well as 362 shopping centres, of which 86 are in Eastern Europe.
