World Trade Organisation Ministerial Conference

Farmers call for fair and balanced 'Mini trade package' deal in Bali

Farmers from across the world united in Bali today calling on negotiators to agree on a “mini package” in the world trade talks which ensures a fair and balanced deal for farmers and agri-cooperatives. The move came as negotiations step up at the 9th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation being held in Bali this week.

In a meeting with the World Farmers Organisation (WFO), FNSEA Vice-President Henri
Brichart, representing Copa-Cogeca, supported WFO position and urged world leaders to make a positive step towards meeting the objectives set out in the WFO trade policy position adopted by farmers throughout the world earlier this year. He highlighted the need to agree a Bali package covering trade facilitation, agriculture and a number of development issues this week and a clear work programme which should include issues on production standards like the environment, animal welfare and Sanitary and PhytoSanitary issues. He stressed that farmers need a fair and predictable multilateral trade system and that a breakdown of multilateral negotiations must be avoided. This is the best way to avoid trade disputes and ensure the greatest benefit for all.
