Spain increases horticultural exports to non-EU countries

According to data provided by Spain's Department of Customs and Special Taxes and processed by FEPEX, Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to non-EU countries increased by 2% between January and August this year compared to the same period in 2012, totalling 570,619 tonnes (7% of the country's total), with countries in the European continent, mainly Russia, Switzerland and Norway, being the most important destinations.

Shipments to countries outside of Europe, such as China, Japan or the United States, amounted to 194,759 tonnes, which represents just 2.5% of the total exported by Spain during this period. The European Union is consequently still the main destination for Spanish products, with 93% of the total.

In the European continent, Russia is the main non-EU destination, with 156,874 tonnes, followed by Switzerland with 101,828 tonnes and Norway, with 64,359 tonnes.

Outside of Europe, exports amounted to 194,759 tonnes. The main destinations were Algeria, with 49,733 tonnes; Morocco, with 33,499 tonnes and Brazil, with 28,627 tonnes.

FEPEX considers it a priority to open new markets. The low volumes exported outside of the EU are mainly due to the effectiveness of the tariff barriers established by some of the largest markets and the fragmentation of these areas of responsibility between the European Commission and the authorities of each member state.
