ComexPerú criticizes Colombia for placing obstacles to Peruvian exports

The Society of Foreign Trade (ComexPerú) criticized Colombia's decision to impose safeguards on agricultural exports from Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia, countries of the Andean Community (CAN).

The products to which the Colombian government imposed import restrictions for two years in order to protect their domestic producers are the onions, tomatoes, fresh potatoes and pears, among others.

This decision was described as an inconsistency by ComexPerú, which recalled that Colombia and Peru had been trading partners for over forty years in the CAN and that they were strategic partners in the Pacific Alliance.

"It is incomprehensible that the Colombian government imposed such measures on Peru, one of its closest trading partners, thus distorting the principles and integration messages transmitted by the Pacific Alliance to its members and the world," they said.

The safeguards imposed by Colombia also apply to shipments from Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, Mercosur member countries.

"We hope that our Colombian friends, who we’ve supported with conviction and fellowship so that they become a part of the APEC, amend this measure and resume the right track," said ComexPerú .
