India: Supplyco to start selling organic products soon
Jacob said the need to promote organic products has become the need of the hour.
“Measures will be initiated soon to sell organic products through Supplyco outlets,” he said. “The government will also look into those measures which has to be initiated at the earliest to check the booming rise in vegetable prices,” he said.
Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K V Thomas said that as the agricultural production has increased, there exists little chance for price hike. The Minister pointed out that the price of onions and shallots shot up not due to the diminishing production, but because of the inefficient storage capacity attained by the states which produce these items.
The Minister said the sudden rise in the price of onion and shallot is because the states that produces these have started storing it and releasing it only at the time when they get a reasonable price. “With the instruction from the Union Government, agencies like Nafed, cooperative departments and many other agricultural organisations have started buying it for the consumer state to distribute it. The government will pursue same measures in the case of vegetables also,” he said.
