EU: Supply of Elstar apples increases

Now that the supply of Elstar apples is increasing, the apple market is turning a corner. According to the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) the price options for the varieties in storage are also increasing.

The price level has been 10 to 15% higher since mid September than it was at the start of the 2012/2013 season. The traders are confident that nothing will change dramatically in the Autumn, as all Western European cultivation areas have had a smaller harvest and therefore enough storage area. It is estimated that the harvest amounts of the two coloured varieties in Western Europe will only be around 1.65 million tonnes. This is even less than in the previous year.
