EU: Trade Agreement with Canada to arrive in Autumn

The European Commission expects a Trade Agreement with Canada to be signed this Autumn, before the year ends, as reported during the last meeting of the International Trade Advisory Committee of the Directorate-General for Trade.

The negotiations of the European Commission with Canada started in June 2009. Nine negotiation rounds have taken place and an agreement is about to be reached. It will entail the elimination of tariffs for 95% of all goods, although there will be exceptions in the agricultural sector.

Spain's exports of fruit and vegetables to Canada in 2012 reached a total of 24,738 tonnes, from which 21,515 tonnes correspond to fruit and 3,223 tonnes to vegetables, according to data provided by the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Spanish Ministry of Economy. As for 2013, and according to the last data updated in May, the total exports of Spanish fruit and vegetables to Canada have reached 4,426 tonnes, compared to the 7,831 tonnes from the same period in 2012.

The European Union's exports of fruit and vegetables to Canada in 2012 reached 48,149 tonnes, from which 39,188 corresponded to fruit and 8,961 to vegetables, according to data provided by Eurostat and processed by FEPEX.
