Japan seizes GM papayas

Japan's Health Minister said earlier this week that is had discovered unauthorized GM papayas, originating in Thailand, in the city of Fukuyama, Hiroshima. The fruit was for sale, alongside conventional fruit, on a food trader's website.

The Fukuyama Municipal Government has ordered the company, Food Net Co., to recall the papayas because the products are in violation of the country’s food sanitation law.

The company is now under instruction to recall fruit already sold. The Health Ministry is now monitoring the entry of papayas into the country.

The ministry says there is very low risk to human health. The food distributor, for its part, says it is confused as it had been assured that the papayas were conventionally cultivated.
