UK Lidl to host Subway franchise

The first Subway franchise to be located within a Lidl supermarket opened on 26 June, in Norfolk. The 800 sq. ft sandwich outlet is operated by Raj Rao, who operates 12 Subway outlets in the UK.

While this is Subway's first link-up with discounter Lidl, Trevor Haynes, Subway area development manager for UK and Ireland, believes it could be the first of many such collaborations, stating, "The simple operations that are involved in running a Subway franchise and the convenience offer make it a perfect fit for these style locations."

"The partnership with Lidl is the first of its kind and we are excited to see what this could lead to in the future".

With 300 outlets in UK convenience stores, universities and colleges, Subway has recently expressed a strong desire to open further concessions in it what it describes as 'non-traditional locations'. Subway currently has more than 1600 stores in the UK and Ireland.

Earlier this month, the sandwich provider announced a major extension to its partnership with Euro Garages, agreeing plans to add a further 70 concessions to the 30 it already operates by 2016. In March 2013, Subway opened its first outlet in partnership with forecourt operator Applegreen in Co. Wexford, Ireland.
