Eighth UK Onion and Carrot Conference and Exhibition
Using her principle of “start clean – stay clean” Lindsey will highlight the main causal agents of botrytis neck rot (b. aclada and b. allii). She will emphasise the main sources of infection and how that knowledge can be used to manage neck rot in the field – and in particular explain how fungicides and their timing can be used to best effect. Finally she will describe how optimal harvest, curing and storage can limit losses in store. Professor du Toit is just one part of a stimulating conference program for growers.
Niels Nielsen a contributor grower from Denmark will present a picture of his company Limfjords and growing in Denmark. The company Limfjords Danske Rodfrugter is situated in Jutland, northern Denmark and was started in 1937 by Laurs Nielsen. Laurs’ grandson Niels went into joint partnership with his father (also called Laurs) in 2004 and took over ownership of the company from his father in 2009.
The company grows and packs 500 hectares of carrots, parsnips, root parsley and beetroot, and supplies retailers in Denmark and other European countries. 2013 started with cold winter months, and a cold early spring, which delayed drilling of the early crops. The weather warmed up considerably towards the end of April and has continued since then, providing perfect conditions for drilling, with timely rains ensuring even germination and emergence. Niels will present an update on the Carrot day of the Onion and Carrot Conference.
