Sjraar Hulsman, The Greenery:

"In warm weather the consumer prefers green asparagus"

The quantities of asparagus arriving on the market are reasonably good at the moment. "The prices have decreased quite a bit, but cannot be called bad so far. Yesterday the price was between 3 and 3.50 Euro. Sjraar Hulsman, Senior Salesman soft fruit and asparagus at The Greenery says, "This time of the year is very fragile, but that is not different from other years."

According to the salesman, the quality of the asparagus is very good. "Many growers started later and the quality of the asparagus is still first class. Also the size of the asparagus is reasonably good. Sales are well divided between wholesale and retail. Germany also started later and still has reasonable volumes on the market, but especially the demand from Southern Europe is very good, also because of a decrease in area in these countries for years already."

The sale of steam packings with peeled white asparagus for preparation in the microwave, with which The Greenery started this year, runs above Sjraar's expectation. "With many new products in due time, it is not always easy to make a good sale. This does not apply to steamed asparagus because sales of these are good."

"We notice that with these sunny days consumers buy green asparagus more quickly, for instance for at a barbecue," Sjraar continues. "Previously the green varieties sometimes had problems with the closing of the head in higher temperatures, but with the start of other good green varieties these problems are in the past. At the request of clients we offer the Dutch green asparagus also in
11 bundles of 450gr. packed in this upright packing, which we supply all year round."

What the asparagus market will look like in the coming weeks is, according to the salesman, largely dependent on the weather and the further development of the price. "When prices are bad, a number of growers will stop. When prices increase those growers will continue a little longer. Traditionally most of the growers keep 24 June as the end of the cultivation, but because of the late start the end this year could be a little later."
