Late start to the German strawberry season

Due to the cold and very dark Spring, growing of the plants was considerably delayed, as mentioned by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website.

Only strawberries growing in glasshouses or poly tunnels could stand up to the weather and the supply of those strawberries was limited.

Strawberries were grown on only about 400 HA in glasshouses and poly tunnels. The open ground cultivation is considerably larger with an area of 14,600 HA.

At the moment the first fruit growing in open ground under cover is ripening, at least in the early cultivation areas in the Southwest of Germany. Therefore supply will increase in the coming weeks. However, it will take quite a while before the open ground harvest will be available in the whole of Germany. This will only be in the case of June. The delay, however, also has a good side: the season started late, but as a result will also last longer.
