"Europe: "Tomato export to Spain starting"

There are enough tomatoes on the market, says Dirk van Nieuwkerk from Anaco Greeve. "The supply started to increase last week. The weather is a little better and the sun is starting to shine."

Anaco Greeve supplies loose round and vine tomatoes and according to Dirk van Nieuwkerk, growers this season are running around one and a half to two kilos per m2 behind as a result of the weather. The supply finally started to pick up last week. "The weather is a little better - the sun is starting to shine. The weather forecast is that it is going to get better," according to Van Nieuwkerk. "Consumption increases with a bit of summer weather which also causes an increase in demand."

The quality is fare to good and demand is coming from all over Europe. "Spain is also starting to come around now." Nevertheless, prices are much too low for this time of year, says Van Nieuwkerk, despite the low supply. Is the weather also to blame? "I don't think so. All of Europe is puzzled and I suspect that that has something to do with it."
