Mexico’s export of fresh tomatoes to the US has increased by 3% in comparison with the previous year, making the country the largest supplier of fresh produce to the USA. Mexico and Canada retained their position as leading exporters of fresh tomatoes to the US (89% and 9% respectively) in the first nine months of 2012.
Other export products with an increasing volume in the same period were cucumbers (14%), peppers (11%) and chillies (7%). Top suppliers of fresh fruits and vegetables to the US from January to September 2012 were Mexico with 77%, Canada with 13%, Peru with 3%, and China and Costa Rica with 1%. 56% of the import of fruit and vegetables in the US comes from developing countries in 2012.
Avocados, strawberries, berries, grapes, melons, mangoes, citrus, nuts, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, asparagus and onions are supplied in large quantities at lower prices throughout the year. The Mexican cultivation areas are geographically more convenient than those in Canada, allowing Mexico to become the largest provider of produce to the US.
