"Sugar snap prices very high for six weeks"

According to a Belgian trader the sugar snaps are very expensive at the moment. "A normal price would be around 4.5 Euro per kilo, but at the moment an average price is between 8 and 10 Euro. It started a few weeks ago, when Egypt stopped supplying earlier than usual. This meant that we barely had any supply for a few weeks. It would usually come from Kenya, but there was a lot of rain there. If they were exported here, they would have gone of before they arrived."

"We now also have sugar snaps from Zimbabwe and Guatemala in our assortment, but they also come from Mexico and China. Apparently there is a good demand from America and England at the moment. They pay in gross for sugar snaps. This means there is a shortage on the market. In Belgium there have been holidays from the 1st to the 9th of May, during which people often eat beans, sugar snaps or white asparagus. However, there was a shortage of asparagus and sugar snaps. Now the demand has gone down a bit. I expect the sugar snap price to go down again to around 6/7 Euro per kilo."
