"It has been quite a while since this happened. Thirty years ago we imported iceberg lettuce from the US more often, but this only happened sporadically during the last few years. The result is of course that the Dutch iceberg lettuce season is shorter by three weeks and that will not be to the good for the market," according to the open-ground vegetable grower.
For the time being prices are very high. Last week the level was around 5/6 Euro and in the meantime prices are doubled at 11/12 Euro. Prices will still be higher for the next two weeks. Especially from Germany the demand is good, but also the United Kingdom is well on the market.
Egyptian red onions
The first Egyptian red onions arrived at Freeland yesterday. There are a lot of quality problems with Dutch red onions and good lots are only available in limited numbers, therefore there is demand on the market. Prices are also higher at the start of the season than other years. We export the red onions all over Europe," Kees says.
