The Dutch pepper season is finally starting to get going. "We've had little supply for a long time, and now it's finally starting to get going," says Wim Grootscholte of 4Evergreen, who grows peppers together with his four sons in Zeeland, The Netherlands.. "You can see that the prices immediately decrease a bit, but today they pulled up again a bit."
The daily trade prices for red peppers is 2.40 and 2 Euro for the yellow peppers. "The demand is good and the supply is still limited, so if you're not already getting good prices, then it must be really bad. But when I have spoken to fellow growers, I've discovered that we're all starting to believe it might be a good year for peppers."
"The area is around 8% lower, and I expect a reasonably constant production. There should be huge volumes cut until around the middle of May. On the other hand, the costs have gone up enough that there should be a large surcharge to compensate. We are remaining hopeful anyway. It's about time for a good pepper year."
