Ukraine: Vegetable prices 21.7% lower this year

In early April the retail prices of vegetables and potatoes were 21.7% lower than in 2012. Prices of potato, beetroot, onions, cucumbers and tomatoes decreased at the food markets. Only the price of cabbage is slightly higher than last year. This was announced by Mykola Prysyazhnyuk, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.

"Vegetable and potato retail prices in early April of this year were 21.7% lower compared to the same period last year. Thus, during 2013 the consumer price indices for these food products were: in January - 106.4%, in February - 100.5% and in March - 98.3%," the Minister said.

"There must be a balance, so the consumers can buy products at a favourable price and the farmers can get profit growing these products. For example, the cabbage price is higher now. But the last year the price was extremely disadvantageous for producers. Now it is 2.22 UAH, and it is a decent one."
