One of the ways in which the Ministry of Trade and Industries (Mici) is boosting Panama's exports is through the implementation of a program called Exports Platform, which also provides opportunities for producers who have never exported.
The initiative aims to persuade Panamanian producers to become exporters with Mici's support, according to the Vice-minister of the entity, José Pacheco.
The platform consists of six training courses dealing with production and export plans, logistics and international prices analysis. After producers have been trained, the Mici ships samples of their products to potential buyers, stated Irma Chong, national director of Export Promotions.
They are also provided with a business agenda, they are given advice and we send them to the country where the potential buyer is, and Mici even provides them with translators for the meeting.
Commercial destinations
The markets in which the program is currently focusing are the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
Trade missions and fairs are organised in which producers make contact with potential clients and promote their products.
On 30 April, a trade mission to Canada will take place, in which 16 Panamanian firms will participate, offering products such as yucca, yam, pineapple, melon, watermelon, spicy sauce, vinegar, and many others.
Other fairs and trade missions are planned for the United States in October, one in Miami and another in Boston.
The same products will be presented at this fair, in addition to others such as pumpkins. In the trade mission to the Caribbean the product range will also be expanded.
Barbados, Bahamas, Aruba, Cayman Islands and Dominican Republic are some of the Caribbean places that will be visited.
The initiative, implemented since last year, is already showing results. Shrimps are being shipped to Egypt, South Korea and Vietnam, and pineapples are first entering the Turkish and Russian markets.
