German bought less fresh vegetables last year, and at the same time the prices went up, reports the 'Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung' on its website. The purchase amount decreased by almost 1 percent to 70.3 kilos per household, the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) reported last week. This is the smallest amount in recent years. The expenditure on vegetables therefore reached a record value. On average a German household spent 143,10 Euro on vegetables - four percent more than in 2011.
Tomatoes, carrots and onions are bought most, according to the AMI, followed by cucumbers and peppers. The share of fresh vegetables from Germany itself has, as in previous years, increased slightly.
