"Hein Buedts: "At the moment half more expensive than last year"

"EU: "Asparagus prices usually dip after Easter"

The lack of sun has a huge influence on the asparagus harvest. Due to the cold spring the parties are small. The only supply is still from heated cultivation and nothing is yet arriving from the open ground. "We really need spring weather for that, and mainly sun. When the sun breaks through, we expect a large supply very soon afterwards. Temperature is also a big influence on the growth, but the sun remains the most important," says Hein Buedts of Buedts bvba.

"The market situation is really the same as it was at the start: smaller volumes and higher prices. The price built up towards Easter. There was a huge demand, as ever shops want a few boxes of asparagus on their shelves. The restaurants also want asparagus on the menu for Easter. A new greenhouse grower joined us this season, and we needed those numbers in March, when there was little supply."

Waiting for the sun
The holidays were early this year and the combination of cold weather and small volumes caused extremely high prices. Very exceptional. Last week the prices were around 20 Euro and now it's at about 15 Euro a kilo. Normally the price takes a nosedive after Easter. This year it's been corrected a little, but remains at a high level. More supply is expected in the next few weeks, and this will probably cause low prices immediately, including quick sales. Now the sales falter due to the high prices in the shops. We are waiting for the sun."
