Positive expectations Central American melon season

The Central American melon season is off to a good start. Rolf Weber of Global Producers says that in all producing countries planting has been reduced, resulting in lower volumes this season. "The past two years have been really dramatic with low prices due to excessive supply and bad weather. We all hope this year will be a good one." The first weeks of the new season have gone well. "Turnover with existing customers is much higher than in the same period last year."

The melons are currently coming from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama. Both Honduras and Nicaragua are emerging countries. The melon exports from Honduras to Europe have grown considerably since 2009, because from that year, the fruit could be shipped to Europe directly using CMA Ships.

Production in Costa Rica, in contrast with the other countries, is slightly decreasing. Rolf does not expect the melon cultivation in Costa Rica to disappear. He explains that the growing conditions in the country are simply too ideal. “Watermelons, Yellow melons, and Piel de Sapo melons need thicker soil to propagate, while Cantaloupe and Galia also thrive on softer ground.
