Indonesia: Garlic import permitted
The import is expected to immediately stabilize the supply and price of garlic.
"We published the import approval in accordance with the import recommendation of horticultural products from the Ministry of Agriculture," Director General of Foreign Trade Bachrul Chairi said on Thursday, March 14.
Bachrul said the approval, which will be issued in the next 10-14 days, is expected to increase the supply of garlic to wholesale and retail markets. "Ultimately it will help lower the price of garlic in the market," he said.
In the last two weeks, garlic prices have skyrocketed. Initially sold for Rp15,000 ($1.54USD)to Rp20,000 per kilogram, garlic prices have now reached Rp80 thousand. In the Oro Oro Dowo Market in Malang, garlic price even reached Rp100 thousand per kilogram.
