India: Ahmedabad fruit cultivation halved

The area of fruit cultivation in Ahmedabad district has declined by 55 per cent since 2005-06. Productivity has also taken a fall, by as much as 66%. For example, where guava production was previously 15 metric tons per ha, it is currently at 14 tons per ha.

The area grows a wide range of fruits, such as lemon, banana, papaya, mango, cherimoya, pomegranate and others, however, it is guava that the area is especially renowned for.

Deputy director of the horticulture department of Ahmedabad, D M Vaghela, said the district has now started with programs to control irrigation salinity which, he said, would restore productivity.
