UK: American Airlines celebrates first air freight flight from Heathrow

American Airlines, currently tying up the details of its proposed merger with United Airways, has welcomed welcomed its first B777-300ER aircraft to London Heathrow this week and marked the occasion by presenting all cargo customers who shipped more than 1000kg of freight on its return to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with a framed certificate. The new aircraft joins the carrier's fleet of long range, wide bodied equipment and will boost available capacity to over 70,000kgs per flight, on the routes which it operates.

The timing of the new route is impeccable with the International Air Cargo Association’s (TIACA) executive summit taking place in the shadow of the Texan airport next month. The cargo division of the US carrier now has around 100 million pounds of global freight capacity and Regional Manager for Northern Europe, Andy Cornwell, commented:

"This is a significant arrival for us in the UK, not only does the aircraft type provide some welcome additional capacity, it is also more fuel efficient than its predecessor. We decided to mark the occasion when we witnessed the first aircraft in our new corporate livery by presenting certificates to each of our key customers who sent more than a thousand kilos to DFW Airport or beyond on this milestone flight."

Paul Griffin, AA Cargo Operations Manager UK and Ireland, added: "This is the first of many B777-300EF which will be rolled out across a wide range of our LHR services over the coming months. It's great to be working with these new planes and we're extremely proud of our operations team who loaded 10 PMC’s* onto this flight – a first for American Airlines Cargo."
