Erik Kieftenburg of Fruit Noordholland:
"Netherlands: "Quick top fruit sales; especially to UK and local markets"
The price of apples and pears are still at a good level. "We sold the last Doyenne du Comice, therefore the remainder of the season we have to be satisfied with Conference-pears," Erik Kieftenburg of Fruit Noordholland from Zwaagdijk says. "Prices are good and the peaks are selling well. We hardly had any complaints about the quality of the Comice this year and Elstar, Conference and Jonagold are also of good quality this year."
At the moment, the most important destinations for pears are local and also the United Kingdom. "Sales to Germany have decreased somewhat, because Aldi and Lidl have changed to imported pears, such as Packhams," Erik explains. His expectations for the rest of the season are high. "Supply is at a much smaller level than in other years. At the moment we are also busy with the last Gieser Wildeman cooking pears."
Prices of Conference pears fluctuate but, depending on the quality, prices for the 65/75 assortment are between Euro 1.05 and Euro 1.10 and for the 55/65 assortment between Euro 0.90 and Euro 1.00. Also apples have a reasonable price. Size 75 Elstar is sold for about Euro 1.00 and the size 70 for Euro 0.85. Good fruit fetches good prices," the trader concludes. "But much depends on the sizes. The size of the Elstar is normally rather small and this causes a lower return per kilo. On average 5mm less means 20% less harvest."
