The economic crisis is challenging Giuliano Gaetano S.A.S.

Italy: Banana prices haven't changed much from last year

This time of year, the supply of bananas and pineapples is low. "At the moment, we are marketing mainly bananas and a small quantity of pineapples. Bananas come mainly from Costa Rica and Colombia, with small quantities coming from Ecuador. Usually, we process on average 36-38 pallets per week," explains Antonio Giuliano from Giuliano Gaetano S.A.S. in Frattamaggiore (Campania).

"The trend is negative. We race to sell a few more packages, even without making profits, just to be able to pay our suppliers."

"The average price for bananas is €15, even if suppliers try to increase it. The price hasn't changed much from last year, and that is because of the crisis hitting the fruit and vegetable markets: we hear about operators forced to close down every day."

The company operates in markets in the Naples and Caserta province. "I don't think we will try to include other markets."

"The main challenges for the future concern our competition and the expenses we face carrying on like this. I hope that I can survive this year and still be able to work next year," concludes Antonio.
